NYC is a place where the possibility of serendipitous collisions are higher than in any other place on earth. Shared individuality it seems, is among the key building blocks of this city especially among those with a creative lean. No one is more suited to depicting this energy than Delphine Diallo who is deeply rooted in NYC culture and has a natural lens on such things. When I think about my own experience of this city around the time this photo was taken, it all checks out and aligns remarkably well with my own lived experience. For it was in and around that time when I found myself right in the middle of my own journey to discover culture in NYC…and out of that came my connection with Jon Batiste among many other things.
I do believe we are headed towards yet another artistic renaissance in the city, and I’ll be keeping my eyes and ears peeled for whatever is coming next…and you can be sure in a city like NYC, it’s definitely coming…
This photo was taken in 2014. Kenmare Street, SoHo. Analog Photography.
Artistic Statement
There was a particular kind of magic in downtown New York during those years. A time when artists still roamed the streets, crossing paths, sharing ideas, stories, and creative experiences. Kenmare Street became one of those places where the unexpected could happen. The afternoon light would fall between the buildings, transforming an ordinary encounter into something timeless. We were creating without knowing what would remain, guided by curiosity, intuition, and the freedom to experiment.
I photographed these moments on analog film, drawn to the beauty of individuality, the poetry of human presence, and the extraordinary within the everyday. Each portrait was an exchange, a moment of trust between the person in front of my lens and the way I perceived them. Film taught me patience, attention, and the importance of being fully present. There was no instant image to review, only the instinct to recognize when something meaningful was unfolding.
Photography was never simply about documenting what I saw. It was about revealing what could be felt beyond the surface.
New York, 2014. A city of encounters, creative freedom, and beautiful possibilities.

An initiative to improve the city that isn’t pure rubbish…
Look. I think everyone gets it… NYC is a DIRRRRRTY place, lovely as it may be.
It’s not uncommon to find piles on garbage bags piled on high on the curbside of virtually any street depending on what time you happen to pass by…but many times that garbage finds it’s way out of the bag and onto our streets and into our park leaving a rather unsavory windswept imprint on our neighborhoods.
With the recent effort by Mayor Mamdani and his team to encourage greater collective participation in improving the city, communities such as Greenpoint Trash Club take center stage.
This neighborhood cleanup group has transformed everyday urban frustration into an opportunity for connection, community service, and a surprisingly good time.
Founded in August 2024 by Tom Aulenback, the club began with a simple logistical problem. Tom had been volunteering with a trash cleanup group in Bushwick, but a subway shutdown made getting there increasingly inconvenient.
Rather than abandon the activity, he decided to bring the idea closer to home and start his own neighborhood cleanup in Greenpoint. What began as a handful of neighbors gathering to collect litter has since grown into a recurring community ritual, bringing together New Yorkers who want to make their streets a little cleaner while meeting some new people along the way.
Volunteers gather for roughly an hour, armed with gloves, trash grabbers, and bags, before spreading out across the neighborhood to collect everything from cigarette butts and discarded packaging to whatever other peculiar “gems” New York's sidewalks have accumulated. No special skills are required, and there's no expectation from participants other than a willingness to lend a hand.
After the work is done, participants head to a neighborhood bar or restaurant to socialize. By then, everyone has already spent an hour working toward a common goal, sharing discoveries, exchanging stories, and accomplishing something tangible together.
There's also something deeply satisfying about the immediacy of the impact. The Greenpoint Trash Club is refreshingly straightforward: see something that needs fixing, gather a few neighbors, and do something about it.
You don't have to solve the city's sanitation challenges overnight to make a meaningful difference on one block.
And in a city where people often live just a few feet apart without ever learning one another's names…that’s not something you simply throw way.
